Beauty in sale
O, she doth teach the torches to burn bright!
It seems she hangs upon the cheek of night
Like a rich jewel in an Ethiope’s ear;
Beauty too rich for use, for earth too dear!
So shows a snowy dove trooping with crows,
As yonder lady o’er her fellows shows.
The measure done, I’ll watch her place of stand,
And, touching hers, make blessed my rude hand.
Did my heart love till now? forswear it, sight!
For I ne’er saw true beauty till this night.
(Romeo and Juliet, Scene 1, Act V)
Scene I, Act V- was the scene when Romeo met Juliet the first time. He fell in love with Juliet as he landed his eyes to her. He attracted to Juliet because of her beauty. I wonder, if Juliet was not as beautiful as she was, would Romeo be attracted to her? If she had pimples, crooked teeth and nose, or even big body would he still be attracted to her? Hm... maybe not! And we won't have the bittersweet love tragedy of Romeo and Juliet.
In the society that adores beauty and perfection, women who are fortunate to have small noses, v-shaped chins and big eyes are consider to be the beauty's standard of many women. Therefore, many women have decided to change their faces or fix their 'wrong' part. That's why many women have spent their money on beauty products, liposuction, cosmetics, and even plastic surgery. Nonetheless, plastic surgery has been a great commodity in South Korea. Advertisements spread everywhere to show the latest surgery procedures and techniques. In some cases, the operations go wrong and the victims ended up having a 'monster' look instead of being pretty.
Moreover, women tend to buy and savor everything that labelled with sugar-free or weight loss food supplement. In most cases, more than 75% women who use the diet product will gain back their old weight after couple of months trying to lose it. Somehow, diet program without strict discipline will be useless. So, in some cases, women try to find the easy way out losing weight by doing liposuction.
However, the story of Catherine Cando, a beauty queen from Ecuador, shows us the risk of doing the liposuction. Somehow, the procedure went wrong and miss Cando tragically had to pay the risk with her own life. A bright beauty queen ended up her life in the operating table. The question is .. is it worth risking our own lives?
Well, there's an interesting concept from Proverbs 31
" Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies."
When we read Proverbs 31, there's an ode for a virtuous woman. A woman who has wisdom, wit and beauty. I believe that the strength of that woman comes from the close relationship with God. Being close with God should not make her a freak. Being close with God should make the woman having an assurance and confidence. This confidence will shine through her speaking, gentle manners and the way she is treating others. By having confidence, she will be the source of strength to her husband and her children too. I believe this woman believe in herself, seeing and valuing herself as the way God has valued her. Therefore, she will keep sweet and optimist in dealing with everything. I think though a woman has only average standard beauty, if she likes to smile and treat other gently, she will be more beautiful than the other woman who has a prefect classical beauty with frown on her lips.
So, what is beauty? The world tells beauty is the standard perfection on glossy magazine. But I think beauty should come from within. If we feel good with ourselves and be happy and grateful of our lives, our bodies and our faces; the beauty will shine through. Every woman has her own unique beauty. It's the same as flowers.. each flower has its own beauty and all will glorify the Almighty!
Throw away the magazine and embrace life.
